Welcome to my weekly update of what I've read, what I'm reading, and what's up next! Apologies in advance, my thoughts are mostly "wow" and "such write" in an attempt to not spoil any of the books I'm posting about.
Finished: Vicious by V.E. Schwab
From Goodreads: "A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal,
and superpowers, set in a near-future world."
Not gonna lie, I love me some V. E. Schwab books. She had me at The Near Witch, kept my heart with The Archived, and continued to fill my imagination with goodies through Vicious. All of these books are different, but an underlying magic ties these books together with Schwab's storytelling. Vicious is a satisfying read from start to finish. The idea of creating a superhero--of being able to have it at the tip of your own fingers--is compelling. It begs the questions "Would I want this enough to risk my current life?" "What kind of ExtraOrdinary being would I be?" I think Schwab gives us enough perspective to decide for ourselves. Each character has a motivation, something to lose, and I found a part of myself within each of them. Even Mitch and his chocolate milk.* Overall, I liked it. I was intrigued. It satisfied my desire for something new. This certainly is a vicious tale--a sunless story told with glimpses of light for a curious someone begging to be fed something dark and different.
Reading: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Up Next: The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
*Yeah, I TOTALLY bought chocolate milk to read the last half of this book.
